Professor Jean-Louis Bischoff holds a doctorate in Philosophy (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) and is authorised and empowered to oversee research at the University of Artois. He is also the director of research of the FEDE

As an international specialist in trends, he is pleased to offer a new work, his 10th, which aims to determine the notion of encounter. In this work he explores the notion of encounter, not as something that we do, but rather an experience that makes us, transforms us, gives us that which we will become. It is an experience that allows us to find, to discover and to receive.

Here we find a good echo of the values of education carried by the project of the FEDE.

Here, we meet Professor Bischoff who responds to our questions:

What is the origin of your new work?

This is my tenth work! As with the last four books, I wanted, to make pop culture (fashion, cinema, music, TV series, design, video games, sports) enter in to a dialogue with classical culture (the academic world with its rigorous approach).

In this study, I want to deepen the notion of encounter, the encounter that appears in our everyday life whether it be friendly, loving or professional …

What are the highlights of your study?

In Hebrew, the word encounter is translated by the word “Matsa”. The term, signifies, among other meanings, to discover, to find. I therefore wanted to honour the Hebrew meaning of the word and show that the encounter allows us to answer the question of “who am I?”. In other words, the book intends to recall with force that the encounter with an other (a work, text, person or country) allows each one to discover oneself, to become a little better that which one really is.

How does the book relate to the education that is at the heart of your activity at the FEDE?

To meet someone is to meet oneself, and it is to discover ones vocation; Of course, among those that offer vocations, however, we find teachers. There is no discipline without a middleman. In reality, the purpose of education is to awaken, re-awaken or to reveal. I believe that an encounter with a teacher can change the course of a life; that is why I end the work with a eulogy to education!
