I have a bachelor’s in economics and a master’s in finance, banking and markets (Abdelmalk Essaadi University, Tanger, 2015).

What have been the highlights of your career so far ?

I am currently administrative manager for a company specialised in dashboards. Previously I worked as customer manager for a bank and as a customer advisor at the Tanger ferry terminal.

Why have you chosen to enrol in the FEDE DBA ?

The main reason why I chose the FEDE is because it is prestigious and has a great reputation in Morocco. Also, I studied the FEDE’s proposal closely and could not help noticing that it offered exactly what I was looking for: I want to improve my managerial skills and better acquaint myself with new development tools; I think the FEDE’s seminars will help me with this.

What is your research topic ?

Digitalisation and the growth of SMEs in Morocco. In my initial investigations, I noticed that there is not enough theoretical research on this subject; that was a good reason to look into it further, since I’m convinced that sound thought is a prerequisite for sound action.

I obtained a bachelor’s in administration, followed by a master’s in human resources management (Abdelmalk Essaadi University). After a number of internships in companies, I now work as commercial attaché for an insurance company. I advise and guide customers on motorbike, home, life and car insurance contracts.

Why have you chosen to study for a DBA ?

During my internships, and in my current job role, I have developed negotiation and agile work skills. I have also improved my patience. These skills have given me a desire to develop my knowledge of human resources.

Is it this that inspired the subject of your DBA ?

Right. I would like to acquire new theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of occupational psychology. Occupational psychology aims to demonstrate that, in improving working conditions and general staff wellbeing, we can boost employees’ performance and help them to achieve their companies’ goals.

What did you study before your DBA?

I have a bachelor’s in management science and a master’s in finance (Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, Tétouan). I want to take my studies further via a DBA.

What’s your current occupation?

I’ve been a banking advisor since 2017 at Attijari Wefa Bank, where I manage a portfolio of clients. My job consists in giving advice on the basis of close monitoring of financial trends.

Will your DBA focus on finance?

Not at all! It focuses on digital transformation. What exactly does it mean? What is required for successful digital transformation of a French SME? How can good strategic recommendations be made in this area? These are the questions I’ll be tackling during my DBA.

Maroua Bahaddiss is a FEDE doctoral student. She answers our questions below.

What did you study before the DBA?

I have a bachelor’s in social sciences and economics (Meknes, Morocco). I also have a European Master’s in Business Management and Strategy (Wes’Sup, Saint Genis Pouilly).

Why did you decide to enrol in the DBA?

I want to continue my studies so as to develop my skills with respect to Islamic finance. This will be the subject of my doctoral thesis. My main motivation is to reflect on and develop knowledge in this area.

What do you consider to be the qualities that will help you to complete the DBA?

I’m determined, rigorous and highly organised. I also have a strong sense of responsibility and understand what it means to commit to a project. As I thought carefully before enrolling in the DBA, I’m not going to drop out without seeing it through. Moreover, I love learning. This can be seen in my passion for languages. I speak Arabic, Turkish, English and German.

What did you study?

Following a master’s in audit and management control (at Hautes Études Commerciales, Abidjan), I successfully completed a FEDE European Master’s in Financial Management and Strategy. I have now decided to develop some additional skills.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I have around 15 years’ professional experience. I’m currently finance and administrative director for the company Pharmafrique. In this role I am able to develop operations and strategy skills in various areas: managing relations with banks, increasing productivity and participation at board meetings.

What is the subject of your DBA?

My thesis will focus on how companies can recover from a crisis in terms of both finance and operations. It will focus on pharmaceutical companies. Indeed, I’ve noticed that a lot of research has been done on bankruptcy but rather less on recovery; my thesis aims to fill this gap in a modest but decisive way. My work is what is known as ‘applied research’ in the sense that the subject is highly concrete: helping companies to get their finances and operations back on track.

Nordine Saadallah: ‘A DBA to explore the connection between human resources and artificial intelligence’

What did you study and what have been the highlights of your career?

In 2000 obtained a French DESS degree in local social development (Institut Supérieur de l’Action Sociale de Lille). This was followed by a master’s in human resources engineering from the University of Lille in 2004. I was human resources manager for various non-profit organisations before becoming director of a social and educational organisation. I have always been passionate about teaching. Currently, for example, I teach human resources management at Wes’Sup, and geopolitics and management at the Ecole Lémania in Geneva. I also supervise dissertations at the Haute École de Travail Social, also in Geneva.

Why did you decide to study for a DBA?

I want to become a speaker-lecturer, and the DBA will provide me with the credentials to do so, along with new skills. It will also help me to grow my network of business contacts and learn more about how the FEDE works. This is important, since it will help me to better understand and adapt to FEDE member institutions and their goals. Better knowledge of the FEDE will therefore help me to tailor the types of lectures/presentations I offer.

What is the aim of your research?

For some years now we’ve been observing an exponential, unprecedented rise in the use of technology in our societies and in the workplace. The main reasons behind all this are digitalisation and big data. All sectors, all professions, all organisations and all job roles (or nearly) have been affected by the craze for new technology. Human resources, just like the other functions of organisations, has been affected by the growing use of artificial intelligence. The research question behind my DBA will be: ‘What new skills will be required given the use of artificial intelligence in the human resources function?’

• Can you tell us about your previous studies?

I have an engineering degree in agriculture from the Institut Supérieur en Agriculture, Lille; it’s a background that has given me a critical approach to practical and concrete issues.

• What have been the highlights of your professional career so far?

I initially worked in the supermarket sector (1986 to 1998). In 1998 I decided to start a career in education, and this turned out to be my true vocation. Nonetheless, I’ve maintained a keen interest in my initial area of expertise – agriculture. Since 1998 I’ve worked as an instructor in various educational institutions. That’s how I came to hear of the FEDE DBA, which is offered to students at some of my institutions.

• Why did you decide to enrol in a DBA?

I’d been planning to enrol in a DBA for some time, so when I discovered the FEDE programme I leapt on the opportunity. The FEDE DBA vehicles my ongoing desire for personal growth – a way of taking on ever more stimulating professional and personal challenges. Indeed, if they are to prosper in a complex world and a highly competitive professional environment, businesses and organisations need leaders with interdisciplinary knowledge, the ability to think internationally and the brainpower necessary to design systems that will shape the future and match the latest social trends. As a doctoral student, I intend to demonstrate that grey matter is an incontestable asset for contemporary and future organisations. My thesis, which aims to find a way to promote the rich output of French agriculture, will, I hope, meet all the requirements of the DBA.

• What has been your experience of the two years you’ve spent at the FEDE Doctoral School?

It’s not easy to plan and produce a DBA thesis. You need a lot of time and you need to learn how to find and process information. You also need to be highly organised. One thing is certain, however: when it comes to writing a thesis, the pleasure of conducting research and making discoveries far outweighs the minor obstacles along the way (feeling discouraged, feeling stuck). I’m currently facing a new challenge: overcoming my impatience to defend my thesis – I need to finish it first!

• What has been your experience during your two years at the Doctoral School?

My two years at the Doctoral School have been extremely informative and enriching. The chief reason is that Professor Bischoff, who is a French-state accredited research supervisor, has helped me to identify an optimal research methodology and analytic approach.

• Can you tell us more about the subject of your DBA?

Though it was not initially my intention, the subject relates very much to contemporary affairs. At the outset I planned to work on financial crises, with the 2008 subprime crisis as my central focus. In the first part of the DBA I planned to discuss the origins of the crisis and the solutions adopted. In the second part I was planning to propose solutions to prevent and deal with future crises. However recent events have made me revise my plans. The world is still in shock from the current, devastating health crisis, which is taking its toll on our economies.

• Has the DBA had an impact on your professional plans? How is your chosen subject connected to your career?

The DBA has given me the opportunity to research my chosen subject, reflect on my career path and meet professionals in the sector. So it has really helped me develop my network. Getting my DBA is crucial for me as I’m certain it will help me provide my future clients with the right advice in terms of investment in financial products. As these products are increasingly complex, a DBA recognised by the IACBE (International Accreditation Council for Business Education) is essential.

• Can you tell us about your previous studies?

I have a FEDE European Master’s in Management and Business Strategy (ENACO) as well as a FEDE European Bachelor’s (DEES) in Marketing, plus a BTS in Business Unit Management.

What have been the highlights of your professional career so far?

Having gathered experience as a company employee, working for example as assistant manager in a company dedicated to the food trade and communications manager in a consulting firm, I took the plunge and became an insurance agent. This has enabled me to enjoy the freedom, challenges and risk of entrepreneurship.

The personal investment is such that my current status has nothing to do with any of my previous positions.

• Why did you decide to do a DBA?

My objective is twofold: to make a contribution to entrepreneurial research so as to improve our understanding of management, and to take a step back from my business activity and learn to take on new challenges. The FEDE’s reputation was an important factor in my decision.

• What is the subject of your research?

My topic is remote working, with a focus on new forms of management, intergenerational factors and applied skills.
