Artificial Intelligence and education – October 2023

Recommendation concerning the impact of Artificial Intelligence on education

On 11 October 2023, Claude Vivier Le Got presented to more than 100 INGOs the Recommendation concerning the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education, which had been initiated by the FEDE since Summer 2023. This institutional document was adopted unanimously at the plenary session of the Conference of INGOs (approximately 100 INGOs were present during the vote). This is a great institutional success for the FEDE and a first step in INGOs’ commitment to provide a framework for the development of AI tools in the education sector and hold European policy-makers accountable.

FEDE position in favor of access to education for Ukrainian refugees

Stand with Ukraine!
Call from the FEDE to its member institutions to make classrooms available for pupils and students who have fled Ukraine

Dear members,

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over four million Ukrainians, mostly women and children, have fled their country to escape the war and save their lives. They are now refugees. UNHCR estimates that there are also approximately 6.5 million internally displaced persons within Ukraine. In total, over 10 million people – that’s about a quarter of the population of Ukraine – have had to leave their homes. Europe has not seen such a large-scale movement of people since the Second World War.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, the world has watched on in horror as a free people has had to defend its right to decide its own destiny and continue to live in democracy. A large number of women have had to flee with their children, leaving their sons and husbands to fight the aggressors. In leaving their country, they risk exploitation by human traffickers eager to take advantage of their deep distress.

The humanitarian crisis has sparked solidarity in Europe and beyond. The FEDEration for European Education (FEDE), which promotes universal values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, wants to do everything it can to help Ukrainian pupils and students. We are calling on you to take concrete action to help Ukrainian refugees continue their education.

FEDE member institutions, regardless of their country, are encouraged, wherever possible, to make space available on their premises to host the Ukrainian pupils and students that have sought refuge in their country. We are also asking your teachers to help train Ukrainian women to give lessons. Much has already been done in the public sector, but the FEDE’s network of member institutions can also make an important contribution: we can help children and young people, traumatised by the terrible events in Ukraine, to keep on learning.

All member institutions wishing to get involved in this humanitarian scheme are asked to please contact the FEDE.

We hope that the scheme will help a large number of Ukrainian refugees to regain a sense of serenity and hope during these tragic times that are so difficult for them, their families and their
country.

Situation of school children in the Sahel July 2019

Young people stand up for Europe!

The FEDE was particularly impressed by the film made by the students of Liceul Teoretic International de Informatica, Bucharest, who won the prize for their age category.

The students underscored the values of peace, equality and respect; their film embodied the EU motto ‘in varietate concordia’ (‘united in diversity’).

The prizes will be awarded during an official ceremony on 19 December at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The FEDE, which will be taking part at the event, would like to congratulate the AEDE for organising the contest, which will help to rally young Europeans around the European institutions and the values that unite us as Europeans.

Response of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

On 23 October 2019, we had the pleasure of receiving the reply from Mrs Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, to our letter of 19 July concerning the dramatic situation of thousands of schoolchildren in the Sahel.

Ms Giannini, Italian Minister of Education between 2012 and 2014, shares our concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the region, and has assured us of UNESCO’s active contribution to the education sector, in particular in coordination with the G5 Sahel and other UN agencies. UNESCO is committed, in particular, to supporting teacher training in the area, alongside France and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, one of FEDE’s privileged partners.

FEDE welcomes the positive actions taken by UNESCO and its partners on the ground, who are working over the long term to improve access to education in the Sahelian countries. The challenges in the region are multiple and complex; they call for the joint mobilization of all relevant actors to restore, in the long term, decent living conditions for local populations.

Poverty and precariousness among students April 2019

Recommendation on student poverty and precariousness in Europe

On 10 April, Claude Vivier Le Got presented to more than 150 INGOs the Recommendation on student poverty and precariousness in Europe, which had been initiated by the FEDE since early 2019. This institutional document, co-signed by the FEDE and the European Social Action Network (ESAN), was adopted almost unanimously at the plenary session of the Conference of INGOs (approximately 150 INGOs were present during the vote). This is a great institutional success for FEDE and a first step in INGOs’ commitment to fight student poverty and hold European policy-makers accountable.

Education and Culture Commission of the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe

“The European Federation of Schools is convinced that access to education for all is not only a fundamental right but also an indispensable condition for the pacification of the Sahel. Jihadist expansion and its violent excesses are also fuelled by the school dropout rate and the feeling of idleness of local populations. We expect a strong response from the international community, commensurate with the crucial issue of access to education in the Sahel.”

The FEDE Human rights committee

The FEDE Human Rights Commission, alerted by the alarming situation of access to education in the Sahel, has committed itself and called on the international community to take strong action.

The dropping out of school of children due to the extreme instability of the territory, the control of militias over educational content, are all negations of the fundamental right that is the right to education. INGOs guided by an ideal of European education, humanist, strong in the values of respect for human rights and openness to others, the FEDE strongly condemns this situation.
